ITS WINTER SALE TIME!!!

Now is the time of year that tack shops are getting rid of all their fall/winter stuff to make room for all the spring/summer items!  Usually they use this time to dump products at super low prices, that aren't moving fast enough out of the store, or have been there for a very long time.  Take advantage of this!!!!

MOST tack shops hold sales two times a year, and these are sales you just can't miss.  So go find out when the sales are for your local tack shops are and make sure you go to them!  Most are going in right now, so hurry up and don't miss anything, because I know of two in my area that are already over :( ....sadness.

Most stores will have 20% off everything in stock, with the usual exceptions: supplements, topicals, and often times saddles (but not always!).  It can be a good time to look for a saddle because instead of having to bargain your way down to a lower price, it could already be lowered during the sale period.

So 20% off is the norm, but you'd be hard pressed to find a store that won't have items going for MUCH deeper discounts.  I've gotten plenty of things for free too as a lot of places will give you free items with every purchase, I've found that tall boot socks are an extremely common and super welcome giveaway!  and often times there will be raffles for gift baskets or saddles even!

So here is my best advice to you... you honestly never know what you will find, but for the best selection go on the first day of the sale, right when they open! (or maybe a few minutes early) Ok, so thats kind of an obvious piece of advice, but take it to heart... trust me.  A lot of times this might be on a weekday, but it *might* just be worth taking a personal day off from work.  I got a fleeceworks half pad at 50% off, they only had 4... but I was able to snag one before they were all gone off the shelf in a matter of minutes.  I have in the past gotten safety vests this way as well... which NEVER seem to go on sale at any great discount.  Its because these things usually do sell well... but for some reason or another they had to clear some stock, so on-sale they went!  Some of the bigger stores will buy things in bulk from suppliers that are in overstock, JUST for their bi-annual sales.  Its a good time to snag super high quality products for el cheapo!

Don't forget the on-line retailers!  Most of them are clearing stock as well.  Smartpak has a decent clearance section, as well as Victory Canter.  Dover claims to be having their "biggest sale ever!" although I'm never usually overwhelmed by their sales, its still worth checking out.

So for a GDF (since I forgot it IS Friday) here are some items I found on clearance on-line that are pretty super deals:

Equine Comfort Correction Half Pads - $89!

Vespucci Pony Bridle - $79!

Herm Sprenger D-ring Bit - $92 (save $40!)

For those of you who think Beval never has good sales - $900 off an almost $2k saddle

Have a good weekend everyone and HAPPY SHOPPING!!!

GDF: My Favorite Ebay Stores!

I wanted to share with you some of my favorite ebay stores that often have no reserve auctions on just about everything (I've scored a saddle or two this way!)

The Cheshire Horse  they ALWAYS have no reserve auctions for some really good stuff, I find myself trying to only look at this store every now and then because I want like half the things they sell!

Stand Up Ranchers  Ok this isn't a $0.99 no reserve auction store... but she does start her prices pretty low, I've gotten a lot of my Ariat jackets and boots from her!

FSS Bridles / Saddlery4U  They have really fun bridles and you can get them from pretty cheap even though they are in the UK.  Occasionally they have Frank Baines and Stubben stuff at no reserve also

Horseloverz  If you are vigilant you can catch when they unload their inventory on ebay a few times a year with TONS of no reserve ebay auctions.

http://myworld.ebay.com/heikefaz/  Well whoever this person is, they are basically me in south jersey, LOL.  Not a $0.99 no reserve auctionist, but they always have REALLy good prices on things.

I actually don't shop on ebay much (hard to believe I know!)  although I AM good at getting deals on there (of course).  These are just a few of my favorite stores, feel free to comment and add some of your own!

Also, a REAL blog post will be coming soon :)

Tack Auctions and GDF!

Well I'm going to bring up the inevitable way to save money... go to an auction.

Auctions are not a very "happy" place, its very hard to go to one knowing that there are horses there that may end up in not so wonderful situations... but there is good news!  The tack and the horses are sold separately so just go for the tack and not the horses.  I know that at the three auction houses I've been to... Camelot Auction in NJ, Harkers Auction in NJ and RSD Auction in MD have it set up so you can come into the buildings without ever looking at any of the horses if its too much of a heartache for you to bare.

Tack is always sold first (at least at the auctions I know of) so find out when the auction starts and go then. Auctions are almost always "hit or miss" as far as deals go and it depends on a lot of factors and honestly one of the biggest factors is the weather.  If you go on a day where its freezing cold in the middle of February or too hot to stand in August... you can bet there will be less people there, and less people generally means better deals.  So if the weather is crummy and there is an auction that night, get in your car and go!  Also if its around a holiday people tend to go away, and there tend to be less people too.  The other obvious hit or miss is if they have what you are looking for!  ... and if anyone else there wants the same thing ;)

A lot of times the only tack at the auction is what the house is selling, and that is stuff the auction owns that they sell there every week (or every other week or so... depending on the auction).  Its always a good idea to find out when other tack dealers might be coming... sometimes tack shops and tack dealers bring things in they need to get rid of and THAT can be a goldmine.  Sometimes they have regulars that come in once a month on the same week, and sometimes its a crapshoot as to when they show up.  But it never hurts to ask around if a known dealer is coming on a certain week.

If you've never been to an auction, you might make a few rookie mistakes.  I've seen auctions where people who have no idea what they are doing drive bids up WAY above retail price just because they see something they want.  They automatically think they are getting a deal because they bought it at the auction!  Wrongo.   I like to recommend that you go to an auction without the intent to purchase just to get a "feel" for it before you go to buy.  Its very easy to overbid for something so if you see something you want don't wait to bid, just do it.  Alternately, if there is a lot of a particular item... don't bid, chances are there are not enough people bidding that actually want the whole stock of that item, and then you can jump in for the extras if the price is right.  If you need more than one of that particular item, when they run out of people who want "singles" they sell them in bulk for less.  Its a good way to get a bunch of halters, flysprays, buckets.... whatever... for very cheap.

Before you bid on anything you need to ask yourself a few questions... one being, do you absolutely NEED that color?  Color is the reason A LOT of items are overbid on.  For example, little Suzy comes the auction with her mommy for the first time and sees a pretty pink halter that she just HAS to have for her pony.  Her mom has absolutely no clue how much that halter is worth or how the bidding thing works, all that she knows is she has to be the highest bidder in order to get the color halter her little Suzy wants.... apparently a pink obsessed teenager, also new to the auction, has her eye on the same halter.  The pink obsessed teenager and little Suzy's mom are now in a bidding war over that stupid pink halter.  Keep in mind, a lot of what the house sells is bottom of the line, cheap-o tack.  So the winning bidder of the pink halter (probably Suzy's mom because the teenager ran out of money) just paid $23.50 for a halter that retails for $12.  This is an incredibly common occurrence, so this brings me to my next question, do you have any idea what the stuff you are bidding on is worth?  If you don't know then don't bid, or you will end up overbidding like Suzy's mommy.  Go to a tack shop first and look around at the prices of things, specifically the things you intend to bid on.  Look at the brands of each thing and the prices listed for those brands.  Often times you have no idea what brand of halter you are bidding on, so go to the store and look at how the cheap halters are constructed versus the higher priced halters so you can get an idea of what to look for.  Keeping in mind, of course, that most of what is sold at the auction is probably of the lower end quality-wise.

Know your products, know the prices and know when NOT to bid... then you will be golden.  Don't be bummed if you don't get what you were after.  It happens, and it happens more often than not.  So you just be patient and try to get it the next time.

Often times these tack auctions will have a special all day sale, usually once a year.  RSD in Thurmount, MD had theirs on New Years Day, so I went with a couple of friends.  The auction started early in the morning selling what was mostly house owned tack that goes through the auction every week.  I didn't buy ANYTHING because the overbidding was rampant due to the large volume of novice bidders.  Its a bummer because I had my eye on a few saddles for resale, but they all ended up going too high.  As the auction went on the horses started going through the main area and the rest of the tack for sale was the used tack that people brought in, which was in a corral outside.  MOST of this tack was donated to horse rescues who needed the money from the auction more than they did 250 english saddle pads, or halters, or coolers, or brushes, or boots... any of those things.  They sold what I refer to as "mystery packs" of bundled "like items".  So one bundle would have 4-5 random square saddle pads and there would be 30 or so bundles total that you could bid on.  I had my eye on one bundle of pads because i could see it contained a black dressage pad (something I came into the auction wanting) at the top of the pile.  I won the bundle for $14... and for $14  I got my barely used black Roma dressage pad, a well used green quilted AP pad with fleece padding, the worlds ugliest navajo patterned AP pad... and to my surprise and delight.. a black "Back On Track" dressage pad hiding behind my Roma pad!!!  Yes it is used, but these pads are $80-$90 NEW so I think I got a good deal.  I have to say that made my day... and its little surprises like that, that make bidding on bundles of "worthless junk" completely worthwhile :)  The deals on these things were pretty good because it was later in the day and most of the morning tack bidders went home, and now we were outside in the cold air, occasionally getting rained on.  I'd say there was about half as many people bidding on stuff  as there was in the morning, and the colder, darker and rainier it got... the fewer people stayed.  I think when I left there was just a handful of people left bidding and stuff was going for honestly... next to free.  See what I mean by weather influences the deals?

So anyway, if you have an auction house near you, and you've never been... now you have the information you need to go and get successful deals on tack!

~~~~~~
Since its also Friday, I'm posting a quick GDF for you all.... Rick's Saddle Shop is having their winter clearance sale and they have some good deals even on-line (in store they are better so get to the Ricks near you this weekend!!!)
and also white AP saddle pads for just $9.99!
If you are near the Ricks in Englishtown or the Ricks in PA... check out their closeout section for an additional 50% everything there!  I scored two brand new Herm Sprenger bits for $15 each... beat that!
Facebook
My apologies for skipping "Good Deal Friday" this week... the holidays have been kind of crazy for me, as I'm sure they have been for many of you as well.  I WILL be updating this blog more regularly now that the holidays are over.  I promise!
Alright so let me start by saying, if you don't have a Facebook page yet... make one.  Even if you don't want to friend ANYONE on there, Facebook is a valuable tool for saving money, so just go make yourself a facebook profile and be a complete hermit (in fact having no friends to clutter up your facebook wall will make this easier, although thats not my personal preference).
If you don't know anything about Facebook (and I apologize for those of you who do), aside from creating a profile, telling people every detail of your life, and stalking high school crushes and ex boyfriends... Facebook has a lot of amusing features!  Like "liking" pages and companies.  You press the "like" button for a company and its as if you are friending them.  Instead of statuses (statusi???) about a person's life, you get status updates about things like SALES! and CONTESTS!  What could be better?
Start by searching for your favorite tack shops... Dover Saddlery, SmartPak, Beval Saddlery, Horseloverz, and Equestrian Collections all have Facebook pages.  Most of my local tack shops do too, so check for yours on there.... and don't limit yourself to local tack shops, "like" tack shops all over the country!  Action Rider Tack is no where near me and they have a couple of weekly contests where you can win cool stuff, like a brand new Tekna Saddle!  Also "like" your favorite companies, they frequently have give-aways and contests to win their merchandise.  Kerrits is a really good one, Irideon, Ovation, Mountain Horse, ADT, EquiFit... I could go on... you can search for your favorites of course.
A lot of times "liking" these pages is a lot like signing up for e-mail or mailing lists, but in my opinion is much less annoying.  They keep you up to date on sales and new products, which is always good, without crowding your inbox... and some of them have exclusive contests, give-aways and sales JUST for people who "like" them on Facebook.
A lot of companies will have "sample sales" only on Facebook, where they sell tack and other things at discounted prices!  These are usually floor samples, demos, discontinued items or items that never made it into their catalogs.  Five Star Tack just had a sample sale on Facebook and I scored a beautiful brand new Chelsea figure 8 bridle for over $100 off the normal price, you could have gotten one too... IF you were on Facebook ;)
One of my favorite things about "liking" Facebook pages is the contests!  Sometimes they make winning things as simple as "liking" a post or posting a comment on their wall.  Other times its about getting as many people to "like" something of yours as possible... and the person with the most likes wins!  Or sometimes you just need to post one of your photos or a link to a product, it can be really easy to win things, trust me!  But it CAN be involved too.  If you have a lot of time to write essays and things of that nature, then your chances of winning things increase (especially if you are a good writer!) people don't always have time on their hands so they skip those contests, but I wouldn't if I were you... some of the prizes are REALLY good.  My friend wins these contests ALL the time, I win a lot... but I don't put as much effort into them as she does, and trust me, it pays off for her!  So one of my new years resolutions is to put more effort into entering Facebook competitions.  I'm looking forward to winning lots of stuff in the new year!
For example, so you don't think I'm lying, this month I won a $50 gift card to SmartPak, just by posting a comment on a product page's wall.  I had even forgot about the contest until I was named the winner, and they posted a video of a sushi chef drawing my name, which means it was meant to be because I absolutely LOVE sushi.  :)
Quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever won was a saddle naming competition... and not just any saddle... an extremely high end, custom-made, european saddle which I named the Elkton.  It is part of Voltaire Design's line up of cross country saddles and costs around $4800-$5100 new.  It kind of blows my mind that famous riders all over the world are riding in a saddle that I named.  Pretty, no?
I WISH the prize for that naming that saddle was actually WINNING that saddle, but alas, it was not.  But still it was a pretty damn good prize... I could pick ANY Voltaire girth or breastplate to own, which ranged from $250-$450 retail.    One day I will own a Voltaire saddle... the leather and craftmanship is just SO nice.
Facebook is really such an awesome tool for getting connected and saving money, if you aren't on it... you SHOULD BE!  and I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to be after knowing that you can easily, with almost no effort, win a ton of cool stuff.
Which reminds me... you all should "like" my blog on facebook.  http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Economical-Equestrienne/313953985292040  <---- thats me!  So, most importantly, you can stay up to date on when I'm making a new blog post, and also get clued in on sales and other things I find that you might benefit from that I don't post in my blog :)  and hopefully join me for some productive discussions from time to time!
So has anyone scored anything awesome because of Facebook recently?
Good Deal Friday! New Saddles and Helmets!
So as I mentioned before, once a week (or more if I feel like it), I will post some note-worthy deals that I find.  I decided to go with Friday because everyone loves Fridays and this will hopefully make Fridays even better for you all!
So this week, since its my first week... I'm presenting to you my top THREE favorite places to purchase new saddles (english, since thats how I roll) on-line at consistently low prices!
1)  www.saddlesource.com which is actually Rick's Saddle Shop (or Rick's Heritage Saddlery).  If you click on the "used saddles" link... hidden in there are a whole bunch of brand new saddles labeled as "Like New"  that just means that they have been sitting in the shop too long and *may* have shop wear.  But they are all still brand new.  See that lovely saddle pictured above this entry?  It was a brand new Pessoa Legacy XL, covered in super soft and grippy calfskin leather that I purchased from Rick's "used saddle" section.  The model was discontinued so Rick's put it on clearance and I got it for an insanely good price.  How about a brand new Barnsby Esprit for less than $1k?   good luck finding a deal like that anywhere else...
Oh and just for good measure another picture of my beautiful saddle (ignore the cat toys... please)  I'm a little saddle obsessed, but its too pretty not to share :)
Thanks again Rick's for my beautiful saddle that I love so much!!!
2)  Classic Saddlery usually has a pretty good selection of extremely well discounted, quality saddles.  Marcel Toulouse saddles have become extremely popular because of the SUPER grippy leather and the wide variety of styles they offer at affordable prices.  Classic Saddlery seems to have amassed a good portion of the overproduced or discontinued Toulouse saddles and are offering them at really decent prices (not that they weren't already decently priced for the quality).  The also have other brands of saddles in there so be sure to check them out, they might have what you have been looking for.
3) Atlanta saddlery has some really high quality saddles at some decent prices; Amerigo, Beval, Courbette, ADT, Prestige... just to name a few.  They usually have pretty good deals, and occasionally have SUPER good deals, so I like to keep my eye on the page to see if they update it with anything new.  I trialed a saddle from them and they were super reasonable in their shipping prices and allowed me to extend my trial period.  I still wish it had worked out!  I really liked that saddle.  By the way they still have it. This is a $2600 semi-custom saddle for $1100 folks.
As a bonus... because I fell off jumping yesterday and this gives me an excuse to buy a cute new helmet!  Action Rider Tack has Ovation Deluxe Schooler helmets on sale for $35, which is a darn good deal!  I want the pretty blue one.
...and for the record.  Ovation helmets are seriously the most comfortable helmets ever and do a really good job of keeping your head cool in the summer.
Lets just hope I didn't break anything yesterday so I can actually use my new helmet soon!!!
Hope everyone has a good weekend :)
